Dan Cameron: Modify Firefox 1.5 to work with all extensions

  • Dave Z · 4 years ago
Dan, what are extensions? Are you talking about bookmarks? They are working. I am using the newest Firefox and installed it this afternoon.
    Thanks,
    dAVE
  • Dan · 4 years ago
They're like add-ons. Check them out here.

I plan to do a little extension roundup soon, so check back. Good to see you back.

Of course, this will prevent you from using any new plugins that only work on 1.5, but I guess for right now that makes sense.

Hey, whatever happened to Flock? I thought you were using that now.
  • Dan · 4 years ago
I'm fed up with how Flock does bookmarks. Until they fix it I will be using the trusty old FF.
  • ste · 4 years ago
thx for the tip i tryed this works gr8 could you tell me how to hack the skin version numbers so i can use my longhorn skin or will this not work?
  • mudshark · 4 years ago
You can get the Bookmark Sync extension to work if you install it using the Nightly Tester Tools extension.
  • andr3 · 4 years ago
This will, however, disable all extensions only for Firefox 1.5, like foXpose.

I hope this doesn't mess with the User Agent String. ;)

    Thanks man!

Thanks, I looked at your link and I don't think I have any extensions. I'll check it out later.
    Thanks,

FYI, didn't work for "minimize to tray" extension.

when i reloaded the browser it said to make sure I had the proper binary DLL or something like that.

just wanted to let u know.
  • wgc · 4 years ago
The extension, Foxyvoice, also will NOT work with this method.
  • wgc · 4 years ago
... but Spoofstick will work with this method. Also if you change 1.0 back to 1.5 Spoofstick will continue to work and can also look for updates. We tried this earlier as this digg is a duplicate of an earlier digg but more detailed.

works nice other than "minimize to tray"
but there is always bugs when modifing anything.
    Thanks for the tip.

I looked at my config file, and there are tons of entries for extensions that I've tried, then ditched.

Can I get rid of these? Are they slowing things down by being there? How do I remove the offending entries?

    Thanks
  • Angry · 4 years ago
You didn't create this, someone else discovered this several days before! Always cite your sources and where you got it from, the post you made makes it appear like you discovered this which I highly doubt.
  • Dan · 4 years ago
    Angry:
I did, you didn't notice the "Original" link above? FYI: I found it weeks ago.

    ahodge:
I don't think the entries really matter since they most likely are only used by the extension itself and not Firefox itself. I'm probably wrong but I wouldn't delete them.

    Thanks for the tip!
  • ahodge · 4 years ago
    Thanks. Great advice!
  • Son Nguyen · 4 years ago
Great trick! Most of the extension just set maxVersion to be 1.0.x and therefore not compatible with 1.5
  • miscblogger · 4 years ago
cool tip! some of my extensions did not work when I upgraded. this should help!
  • Chris Heath · 4 years ago
The "nightly tester tools" extension does this nicely and gives you a checkbox on the install dialog box (the one with the 3 sec pause) so you can overide the version and make compatable...

There's a much easier way ;) I posted about same problem on my blog 1 day before your post :)

    Check http://maxt.dk/archives/2005/11/29/firefox-exte...

Probably want to update your post with this nifty info ;)

    Greetings!

  • Nalin · 4 years ago

  • Dan · 4 years ago
You must of done something else.
  • Cal · 4 years ago
Thanks Dan, I am spreading the word. This worked great!
  • luca · 4 years ago
Well if you want the bookmark sync extension you can download it from http://www.beatnikpad.com/archives/2005/09/09/f... it works great with my Firefox 1.5 optimized for G4 .
  • DanGeech · 4 years ago
I originally was dissapointed when changing the “app.extensions.version to 1.0, because I couldn't run 1.5 extensions. Well, I changed the value to 1.5, and all my 1.0 and 1.5 extensions work.
Thanks WGC, you made my life that much more pleasant.

    Hello:

Read your post and followd your guideline. All my extensions are now working as they did with my previous version of Firefox 1.07. Thanks a lot. I had read about it but was reluctat to do it, fearing that it could hamper my Firefox 1.5 version.

However everything worked according to the book. Thanks a lot for this tip. I'm spreading the word at my block; Epiac's Place. Take a look.

    Cheers,

    Omar.-

I am not back, just lurking in the background...

this is bloody great ! thank u!
  • anon · 4 years ago
This is a VERY bad method and will break all extensions that require 1.5 to work. Do it if you must, but using nightly tester tools to override and make your old extensions work is a much better method.
  • michael · 4 years ago
On a side note; you need to change version number back to "1.5" if you want to use the Gmail Space extension too.
  • Jorge Gómez Jiménez · 4 years ago
I applied the tip, but my Firefox now only run in safe mode. What can I do?
  • jakken · 4 years ago

  • Ami Shachar · 3 years ago
    Hey DAN

    1. Are those modification valid for the NEW ThunderBird v1.5?

    Thanks, Ami
    2. Do you know the date which TB 1.5 appeared?
  • Dan · 3 years ago
I haven't the slightest with either one of your questions because I use gmail.
