I don't think it's right or fair to block a site just because you don't like it or you don't approve of it. There is no reason for libraries to block access to myspace, libraries are public forums and the free internet access should not be restricted. If you are offering free internet at the library, then deal with it, seriously. You can't impress your social and/or moral hang-ups on other people.

I am a middle school teacher and I see no reason for myspace to be blocked. Yes, people do stupid things, but they're probably going to do them anyway. People make mistakes and shit happens, but people learn lessons from the mistakes that they make... as well as the ones their peers make. It is probably dangerous to reveal so much personal information in a public forum, but it happens. To block a site because you think it's annoying for kids to come in and giggle is ridiculous.

Libraries are much more than just sources of information... they can be social avenues, learning venues and sometimes people go to the library to just have fun... giggling isn't harming anyone. Children giggle, get over it.

Yet another benefit to blocking MySpace - it encourages young people to be more resourceful in finding ways to work around the restrictions.

Trisha, there are some things that your school could do to completely prevent you from using MySpace. However, it's unlikely they will go to those extremes, so it's probable that you can find a way to work around their restrictions. If so, more power to you.

I think that Dan's original point in this post was regarding blocking it on the network that he was in charge of, which wasn't intended to be used for that purpose, so I see no problem with him doing that. Same for a school network or your home network, there are people in charge of those who make the rules for how they're used.

Public libraries, however, are a different story, and I would always fight for public computer access to be completely unfiltered.

myspace is awsome but our school keeps finding all the proxies and my dad won't let me on the comp at home so this is where i get on i say fuck all myspace haters too it's a way to keep in contact with ppl that you usually don't get to see and it's also a great way to meet new people with the same interst

Really their is nothing wrong with myspace. I think plenty of people would rather have a bunch of kids on that site designing a page of theirs rather then walking down the street being in gangs, doing drugs, and just being bad.
