If you wanted to really have fun you should redirect the myspace queries to your own pages, and from there there's all kinds of fun things you could do. Or sniff their traffic and then start publishing on their myspace accounts; that's the only way they'll really learn their lesson about using a network that's not under their control.
I'm not into censorship either, but MySpace can be annoying enough to make an exception. Most of the myspace pages I've seen should be blocked for bad design alone, not to mention lack of any interesting content.
But seriously, (in case you couldn't tell I was semi-joking here), no one is trying to make any decisions for you, or tell you you can't use any website that you please. He's just saying you can't go there on HIS computers. The public libraries in the area have free internet access if you really need to go explore the endless friend collections and such without your mommy looking over your shoulder, if that's what you're worried about.
Just don't block my site: http://worstofmyspace.com
i can get into myspace ANYTIME i want whether i'm at school or not and my friends make proxy sites so i'll never run out of them
try and block them all i dare you
All you'd need to do is block all outgoing traffic from that network, and only allow connections to a proxy server on that network, which will only proxy standard http traffic (not https). By filtering that traffic and banning any myspace access within it, and blocking any encrypted traffic (or only allowing https connections to a white list of trusted hosts) you would not be able to get to it, because you could not connect to the proxies. To further lock it down, you could just implement a total white-list policy on the proxy server (the one that is the only means of connecting to anywhere outside the network), and then you would be really stuck.
This can be done by anyone with any old computer, two network cards and a copy of Linux. Sure, most people (schools, etc.) wouldn't go through the trouble and/or know how, but I've personally set up this kind of thing, and I'm positive that it would prevent you from getting to MySpace.
already then..I voiced my opinion ona site i found in a google serch for "myspace hating sites" lmao
bye.

IT IS a PUBLIC library!
so it IS for the public.
ignorant people like you make me angry.
trisha
Trisha, there are some things that your school could do to completely prevent you from using MySpace. However, it's unlikely they will go to those extremes, so it's probable that you can find a way to work around their restrictions. If so, more power to you.
I think that Dan's original point in this post was regarding blocking it on the network that he was in charge of, which wasn't intended to be used for that purpose, so I see no problem with him doing that. Same for a school network or your home network, there are people in charge of those who make the rules for how they're used.
Public libraries, however, are a different story, and I would always fight for public computer access to be completely unfiltered.
Nitey Nite
I am a middle school teacher and I see no reason for myspace to be blocked. Yes, people do stupid things, but they're probably going to do them anyway. People make mistakes and shit happens, but people learn lessons from the mistakes that they make... as well as the ones their peers make. It is probably dangerous to reveal so much personal information in a public forum, but it happens. To block a site because you think it's annoying for kids to come in and giggle is ridiculous.
Libraries are much more than just sources of information... they can be social avenues, learning venues and sometimes people go to the library to just have fun... giggling isn't harming anyone. Children giggle, get over it.
I think I mentioned a couple times that I'm against any blocking in public libraries, but that isn't the case in this particular situation.
