I had to remind myself 10 times today I don’t need a refurbished iPhone. The reasons don’t include it not being new, I’ve always had success with their refurbs. They’re: No video out No copy/paste all the other reasons like ringtones and such are ... Continue reading »

  • I was weaken by this too. $100 off is helpful. Been selling stuff like crazy on Amazon, but still have some hangups with the iPhone, albeit my next phone will be the iPhone. Just trying to put it off until at least generation 2. Ready for the video-out, 16GB, Flash supported, $300 model. Wonder how long we will have to wait? Can't believe my 5gen iPod has still not had a substantial upgrade in 12+ months. Wanna see what the next iPods look like...but still want a stupid iPhone. I'm shocked you've stayed the course on not getting one for this long.
  • I'm surprised too. I really want one and if the next iPod isn't updated dramatically I think I'm going to settle for gen-1 of the iPhone, hope for some better updates or hacks and keep my ipod too. I just can't get over the web browser and the speed of edge being noticeably faster compared to my Curve (hmmmm...?).
  • Yeah, I am pretty shocked you haven't gotten one yet either. If I had put a bet on that, I surely would have lost.

Have you been using other iPhones than the one in the store and Johnny's that we used that one night? Just wondering about the data speed, since so far I haven't ever seen any impressive (non-wifi) speed showings.
  • I do have to give them props for having the best browser on a phone, only hindered by its lack of a real keyboard, because those on-screen keys are annoying.

Of course, I'd expect such an expensive device to have a great browser, so that is as it should be.
  • did dan just say if they don't come out with a new ipod soon, he'll have to get the iphone he doesn't want instead of waiting? and i was about to congratulate him on his new found self-control.
  • No, if I did say that I meant that I'm going to wait until the next iPod before I choose whether I want the iPhone or not. I've seen pics of the new nano (supposedly. they are in my Google Shared) and if the iPod is just going to get smaller without any new functionality and the iPhone gets some more features around the same time I will get the iPhone. But that iwll be at least a month (rumored ipod release).

I've played with a bunch of other iPhones. One yesterday at work where I loaded my site and it came up in 5-7 seconds which is unheard of on edge. I think the browser says a lot since it can take the data as fast as possible and process it at the same time, I think phones like the curve have a hard time juggling what it's going to process sometimes.
  • Yeah, I guess it makes sense that the speed would be relative to what you're comparing to; the times I've used the iPhone it has seemed very slow compared to mine.

I think that if they offered 3G support (which AT&T does have), it would be a much more tempting purchase.
  • A more compelling of a purchase for you or me? Because you've already said you would never buy an iPhone.

If you're phone works as fast it's because of processing power which the iPhone has a 600+mhz chip.
  • More compelling for the general user. It wouldn't be enough to overcome the negatives for me personally, but I realize that most people don't value things the same way that I do.
  • I think the general user doesn't care as they don't even know that there is 3g and edge does load fairly fast. Fandango, a very media rich site loaded in less then 10 seconds.
  • Maybe it's a difference in expectations, but 10 seconds is an unacceptable load time for any site on any browser, including mobile ones, IMHO.

Fandango, for example, should have a mobile version of their site that loads in a few seconds (at most) on an EDGE speed connection. Many major companies do (Google, BofA, etc.).

Of course, that does sacrifice some of the visual style of the site, but it makes it much more usable on smaller devices. The iPhone is somewhat unique in that it has a big enough screen and the features to enable viewing "regular" versions of sites like Fandango, but then you get back to the speed issue: 10 seconds is WAY too long for my tastes.
