I've heard these have a problem with burned out pixels. Is this true? :q

No more then any other device I would imagine. Mine is perfect and the 3 at the Bridge are fine too.
Maybe Sony has a bad rap about bad pixels or maybe they don't have a good quality check process because it the PSPs were horrible with dead pixels.

Good timing on this one; we are thinking about getting a DV cam. I'll probably check out some of the lower Sony HC models. Any recommendations?

The HC32 or HC21 should be good based on how the hc42 is but you never know.
You can get either one new on eBay or your best bet is to go to Costco and get one, that way in 6 months if you don't like it you can take it back and get the newest version, Costco rules. No but seriously, Costco does have a great return policy if something goes wrong, you do have kids. The price will be good too.

Or at least $400. Costco has, I think, the HC32 for around $450.
